Political mentoring is a powerful tool for fostering inclusion in decision-making and political spaces. In this bog post I highlight some reasons why.

Diversifies political representation

Political mentoring will help underrepresented groups—such as women, minorities, and individuals with disabilities—navigate barriers to entry into politics.
By increasing visibility, mentoring empowers diverse individuals, ensuring that their voices and perspectives are included in decision-making processes.

Builds confidence and skills

Politics can be daunting for newcomers. Mentoring guides mentees through complex systems, boosting their confidence. Mentees also learn essential skills like public speaking, policy formulation, and negotiation, which are critical to meaningfully participate.

Promotes knowledge transfer and cultural awareness

There are many Finnish politicians who have been in decision-making for a long period and have seen the dynamics in different contexts. Through mentoring, these mentors share knowledge about political processes, strategies, and challenges, equipping mentees with insights they might not easily acquire otherwise. It is also an easy way to transfer knowledge gained from lived experiences. Mentoring can teach mentees and mentors how to navigate cultural nuances and advocate effectively for their communities.

Encourages networking and opportunities

One the biggest challenge for underrepresented groups is limited networks where there is knowledge about the political process. Mentorship introduces mentees to key political figures, stakeholders, and institutions. These connections can lead opportunities for roles, nominations, or leadership positions that mentees may not have accessed independently due to lack of exposure to show their capabilities.

Mentored individuals often bring firsthand knowledge of marginalized communities' needs, resulting in policies that address real, everyday issues. Politicians with inclusive mentoring backgrounds are more likely to engage with and represent diverse constituencies. Inclusion through mentoring enhances the legitimacy of political systems by providing the opportunity for everyone to have a stake and a stance in governance. Mentoring builds a pipeline of future leaders committed to diversity and inclusion.
